A SPICMACAY presentation of Purulia Chhau from West Bengal was held in school on 20thOctober 2016. Puruliya Chhau is an ancient folk art from Bengal that is known to have evolved from tribal martial practice over a century ago. Today, it is practiced by just a handful of nativeartists from Purulia where it is still passed on from generation to generation. A troupe of 16 dancers led by Shri. Tarapad Rajak presented an hour-long concert which depicted the epical story of Goddess Adyashakti Mahamaya assuming the form of Durgatinashini to kill the demon Mahishasur. Live music, elaborate costumes and head gears and remarkable theatrics and acrobatics of the artists were the highlights of the concert. The school auditorium reverberated with applause time and again as the artists presented some breathtaking feats and hilarious antics. Students of all the classes III and above attended the programme. It was an enjoyable experience for the juniors whereas the seniors saw this as a wonderful opportunity to explore and appreciate our rich and varied heritage. The audience was completely spell bound throughout the performance. The Principal Mrs. J. Rao lauded the efforts of SPICMACAY in promoting Indian Culture and Art amongst youth and honoured the artists on behalf of the staff and students of the school.
